Question:
Bob, good for you. We will be here for you when you need to vent. I know how hard it is to quit. My sister in law really battled with this for years. Finally she got one of the patches and hasn’t smoked now for a year. I am very proud of you for making the smart decision to do this. — We Are Raising Awareness of Scleroderma Providing Support, Information and News Sherry Messick, Surviving Scleroderma http://SclerodermaSupport.com Scleroderma Foundation Greater Washington DC http://sclerodermagw.org "Together we can beat the odds!" Bob, Good luck quiting smoking. It took me three years after I got the speech from my doctor about losing digits. I was so addicted that I was willing to trade a couple toes. I had tried atleast 3 dozen times in the past to quit. I did hypnosis, support group, gum, etc… I have chronic asthmatic bronchitis and was hospitalized with pneumonia and coughing up blood and still sneaking cigarettes. On May 20, 1998 I became nicotine free. Even while I was going through the withdrawl I had many excuses to allow me to give up, but I didn’t. Finally, after 27 years of nicotine controlling me, I am free. (Now I have to work on the controlling people in my life
Lately, my lung capacity has been dropping. Sometimes I feel like crying. I went through hell quiting and I gained alot of weight and feel worse than ever. I am breathless walking from one end of the house to the other. Then reality seeps in. How would I feel if I were still smoking? Quiting is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Good luck and use your doctors to help you through it if you need to. They can prescribe medications, such as tranquilizers for a short time to help through the physical withdrawl. Some also prescribe Zocor (a.k.a. Wellbutrin) that helps with the cravings. Do whatever it takes. –Ruth

Go for it, Bob! I quit smoking in 1992 after 16 years of it. Can’t wait ’til I’ve been a NONsmoker loger than I was a smoker! I’ll race ya!;-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Robert DeSavage wrote in message <36fa681e.2855…@news.tiac.net>… >I went for my physical today and all is well. Great move! I’m sure it will be tough, but keep up the resolve. We need you around!

How is the patch working for you? Be tough! It can be done as I did it. I was smoking two or three packs a day and did so for almost 20 yrs. When I found out I had sd and the lung involment, I said no more as I want to play with my grandkids when I become a grandparent. Okay, Bob, there are 2 of us fighting it out at the same time!! I’ve been on Zyban for my 8 days and tomorrow AM I put the patch on for the first time. I’m scared of not making it, but I won’t admit it to my friends of family. In order to be able to quit I have to want to. I hope that I want smokeless more that the comfortable place to hide that a cig gives me. I quit before for 7 years using the gum, and yes, I know I was a fool to start up again, but I had reached my breaking point and it was either smoke or drink!! LOLs! I’ve been smoking now for almost 5 years and I want out from under! Wish us both well, Jo NJ

Since I am about to retire in August and starting out fresh, I decided to stop at my local pharmacy and get the ‘patch’. Starting tomorrow morning, my first venture with the patch will begin. I’ll prevail because I want to quit. Not only is smoking harmful, it’s expensive. Ten weeks of Nicoderm is a hell of a lot cheaper and healthier than the Pall Malls. Bob – alle…@tiac.net ICQ 6418621

You can do it, Robert, I have faith in you. Just think how much quiting will help your circulation and hang in. So far so good! I went on the patch the other day and I feel no overwhelming desire to smoke. My job is a smoker’s paradise, because where I am in a vehicle for most of the day, and the sole occupant of the vehicle, I could smoke as much as I wanted, Despite this, I go thru the day without giving it a thought. I don’t miss cigarettes at all. Patch or not, of great importance is being able to have someone to provide support. Having someone to talk to is part of the deal. Being a member of A.A. helps me because the same principles apply when trying to quit smoking. I can only worry about today, for yesterday is history and tomorrow will be a mystery! I have another incentive for you. Put the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes into a piggy bank. Use the money you save to come to the scleroderma conference this summer in San Diego — and we can all celebrate your victory!
