Question:

<< My pulmonary doctor wants me to have a pulmonary test called a lung compliance and PDI to check for diaphragm and muscle weakness. >> Doris, I had a test to check on the strength of my diaphragm. I blew into a small, hand-held machine as hard as I could. Then they reversed the machine and I inhaled rapidly. This was repeated three times. They could tell from the readings what percentage of my diaphragm was working on inspiration and exhalation.  I sort of flunked the test. I was given twelve weeks of cardio-pulmonary rehab along with a plastic device I refer to as my "duck whistle". I am to use it three times a day and breathe in and out through my mouth while clasping my lips around the plastic to strengthen the diaphragm. You would be surprised how hard it is to do! If that is the test you have ahead, it is not difficult. BTW – rehab was to improve PFT scores and cope with conditioning for cardiac problems. I don’t think it was intended for the diaphragm stuff. However, the pulmonologist feels that my diaphragm is compromised because of scleroderma. I hope this helps! Metronym

Response:

Doris, ifyou want to know about a test, just ask me, my doctor has sent me for every kind of test.  I had a pulmonary test done, and it is no problem.  Its an MRA of the lungs.  The worst part is lying perfectly still for so long at a time, can’t move because they are taking pictures..  I hope your results turn out better than mine. Irene

You might try Alt. Support Arthritis. they have a couple of MDs who pick up medical questions. Nancy

Response:

OK what is a PDI is it Pulmonary Diaphram Index?  Maybe he thinks the muscles in your diaphram have stiffened and that is giving you difficulty in breathing. Please let me know how you make out. I have pulmonary problems too,and I am interested in the pulmonary tests and why they give different people different ones…….Love Gigi

Response:

My pulmonary doctor wants me to have a pulmonary test called a lung compliance and PDI to check for diaphragm and muscle weakness. Would like to know what these tests are and can explain them to me. Doris

Response:

I checked around a bit and can’t find any reference to these two tests. Maybe they have other names or something. I can understand testing for diaphragm and muscle weakness if you have a breathing problem. All I ever got was the usual PFT and x-rays. Did you try one of the sites where you can ask a doctor? There are several around.
