Question:
Anastasia has just posted her survivor’s story on Scleroderma from A to Z. Anastasia: Surviving Granddaughter of a Diffuse Scleroderma Patient http://www.sclero.org/support/stories/submissions/anastasia/a-to-z.html "We went everywhere to figure out what she had but no one knew. Traveling to a different hospital finally we heard scleroderma…My question is if she might have had this disease many years ago since she died so fast? Was this just the last stage? It progressed so fast. Are there many cases like this?" If you have any words of comfort or advice for Anastasia, or if you also know what it’s like to have lost a loved one, she would love to hear from you. Airports? You mean as to a cause for SD? If that’s the case I can think of maybe a couple…airplane exhaust, the fuel they use, for two. Michael, I’ve heard reference to this myself in the past. Do you happen to have any links on the subject to share with this? I’m hard put to say whether it was hard facts I was reading, or just people discussing the possibility. Sorin has recently posted her caregiver’s story on Scleroderma from A to Z. Sorin’s cousin has an undiagnosed illness, which may be scleroderma. They live in Romania and are seeking answers to his condition, and are eager to hear from others with input or support. Since we know that at this time there is no proven cause for scleroderma I assume this is just another theory like all the others. Many doctors believe there might be multiple causes of scleroderma. Meaning one person may have got it from an environmental exposure and another may have got it genetically and I’m sure there are other possible links for people. Dr Gotlieb is very active in the arthritis newsgroup. He goes by Dr. Doc. You might want to visit his site and email him and ask him the particulars on this theory. I would be interested in knowing more on this since I have lived near Air Force bases which have large airports for the last 21 years. There is some information related to causes of scleroderma on the website of Dr David Gotlieb MBChB FCP(SA), Rheumatologist & Specialist Internal Medicine, from Cape Town, South Africa.
