Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » ANA is this hi or low?

Question:

You didnt state what test you had done. I had an ANA that goes by a different scale then the one Ed stated. The results are 0=negative 1 – 16=weak postive 17-30=postive 31-60=strong postive. Did you also have an SLC70 and a Smiths Antibody, RA tests done? I have seen mine yo-yo with no explaination given. Please retest and keep us posted. I have CREST and saw my ana as 200 units and it also said centromere pattern     this was last year, and i have not been tested this year.                                                    Could it go up or down?   THANKS,                                   LISA OTT

Lisa, The ANA reading is normally reported as a titer in a form like 1:640. My understanding is that a positive titer level starts at 1:40 and doubles, so possible values for a positive are 1:80, 1:160, 1:320, 1:640, 1:1280, etc.  (My last ANA was 1:1280, for example). 200 would not normally be the result for an ANA titer unless the lab is using some way of reporting results that I have not seen before. The centromere pattern is the pattern that is typically seen for CREST.  There are other patterns which correlate more with diffuse scleroderma. Normally the titer remains fairly stable, but lab testing variation alone can give a reading of plus or minus one titer level.  So if your normal result is 1:1280, you could easily see either 1:640 or 1:2560 without any true change in your ANA titer level. There is not a lot in the literature about changes in ANA levels over time.  The good news is that there is no correlation between ANA titer and severity of disease, i.e., one person could have a titer of 1:320 and another 1:2580 with no difference in severity of disease or symptom level. However, a number of years ago there was one article which reported on three people whose ANA titers suddenly jumped by a huge amount, for example 1:320 to 1:20480.  In all three cases these huge increases in titer levels immediately preceded a noticable increase in symptoms. This is apparently a very rare phenomenon, however, so I wouldn’t be concerned about it. If you haven’t seen it already, you might want to also check out my scleroderma FAQ located at:         http://www.synnovation.com/sclerodermafaq.html Hope this helps.                 Ed On 22 Sep 1999 17:01:46 GMT, lotts…@aol.com (LOTTSHEA) wrote: >I have CREST and saw my ana as 200 units and it also said centromere pattern   >  this was last year, and i have not been tested this year.                     >                               Could it go up or down?   THANKS,               >                    LISA OTT
