Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » Bentylol in Canada
Question:
I read the talk over Bentyl and wanted you to know that its equivalent Bentylol that is prescribed in Canada is Not habit forming / narcotic. You had me concerned because I’ve been trying it for a month happily. I checked with my doctor today and she gave me the positive info. She also said a lot of medical sites on the www are inaccurate and/ or misleading so to doublecheck with your doctor before taking things as fact. Colleen, I do appreciate the surfing you do and the info you provide, but I thought newcomers should know as they’re surfing for sd info that not all they read may apply to them, as I found out today. Hi Colleen! You are right, we are here to learn from other peoples experiences. It is accepted by the group that not everything written will apply to everyone else. We make our own decisions (with help from our Doctors) as to what may or may not help. Take care. Sam If you have doubts about something you read on the internet, go to the library and check any drug in the PDR. That is your real authority. Each person may react differently to a drug. i won’t take Tylenol 3 because it totally knocks me out. Other people take it with zero problems. Trust your PDR. Nancy

I guess we all react differently. Before scleroderma, I was diagnosed with IBS and took Bentyl for 24 years off and on but more on than off. If I had a good period, I would not take it for three or four months. Then I would have trouble and take it around the clock for a month or so. I was never addicted to it. It is my understanding that Bentyl is an antispasmotic with no additional drugs … nothing to "dope you up" … as compared to other medicines in the same class that also contain a relaxing component. Anyhow, I was never addicted to it and when scleroderma bowel complications set in, I was told never to take it again as my problem is now hypomotility rather than hypermotility and "slowing things down" could kill me. I agree that we read many things on the internet that are simply not true. However, the PDR is really a large advertisement by drug companies as they pay to be included in the publication. I guess we need a doctor we can trust and rely on their judgement … or a reputable pharmacist … who knows and studies drugs … and has information far beyond that found in a PDR. Several prescription medications have been mentioned in this strand that are known to be addictive. Pain is not reason enough to allow ourselves to become addicted to pain meds. Bentyl helps many people suffering with IBS to achieve management without sedation. If you find yourself addicted to other substances in your effort to control pain, may I suggest your local hospital’s pain management program? Metronym

Hey Colleen, I have been taking Bentyl since 1994, I don’t take it every day but do more days than not. I have never gotten any drowseness from it and don’t think that if I stopped taking it I would have a problem except with my stomach. It has truley been a life saver for me as I couldn’t funtion with my stomach without it some days. I hope I haven’t become dependent on it other than to help my stomach. I also do take other medicines "narcs" again not every day but need them bad some days. The only thing that I take every day is Darvocet, privacid and the dredded xanax. I’m not doing to well right now so to think that I should give these up is a scary thought for me. Just my random thought pattern at work. I have had a headache that will not go away for about two weeks, last week I had a weird thing happen to the right side of my face some pain and nunbness, and this week two unbelievable nose bleeds. I have an appointment with my doctor on wed. next week. I have no clue what’s going on but I’m kinda scared. I’ll let you know what the doc. says. Janis

I researched the drug Bentyl for a long time and found it can be be addictive. I have been on it for 18 months now and am weaning myself off it as I want to see if my body can function on its own. It is a rx, it is an antispasmatic, it does cause drowsiness and it is in the class of drugs considered habit forming if overused, just like the new diet drug meridian.
