Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » Calcification of my fingers

Question:

Hi again, Mark… forgot one more URL you may like.  Following is a great resource, listing many of my favorite medical references all neatly sorted by topic.  It is EXTREMELY comprehensive… you may be exploring there for days :) http://www.blkbox.com/~cherith/health.html Best regards,

Mark – I am not qualified to hazard more than a guess, but your symptoms sound exactly like those of one of my closest friends.  She has a disease called Scleroderma.  There are several sites and a couple of newsgroups that discuss this.  Sorry, don’t have the links here.  Please see a rheumatologist for a proper diagnosis.  It could probably be many things, but this is the one that immediately sprang to mind.   Janet.

To whoever may offer any help in anyway,   I am a 21 year old male who has experienced what I will call ‘calcification in the fingers.’ I noticed it first almost 5 years ago on my index finger on my right hand. At the present time this disorder has progressed to include on my right hand: my thumb and index finger, and on my left hand: middle finger and pinky finger. I have undergone a number of surgeries to remove this calcification, but it keeps on returning. The areas of calcification are quite painful and limit the types of things that I can do, so it is very important to me that I get some kind of help. I have seen many doctors in Winnipeg, Canada, but so far no one has been able to do anything for me but suggest to have the calcification removed. I do not believe this to be the best solution because it does not prevent the calcification from re-occuring. I would like to know if anyone has any information of ways of treating the current calcified fingers and preventing the calcification of my other healthy fingers, or even just any type of information or to be directed to someone that would be able to help me. Sincerely, Mark Judycki (Please email me directly at:

Hi, Mark… I’m sorry to hear of your condition.  You didn’t give any name to it, but I’m going to take a wild, unqualified, and totally non-medical stab at guessing that it might be scleroderma with the CREST syndrome (calcinosis). (I’ve been waiting to see if anyone with more qualifications than little-old-me had something better to offer.)   This is a condition where for unknown reasons the body deposits calcium salts under the skin in layers, causing all kinds of problems.  Some people with severe cases have to have this calcium removed surgically periodically, causing more problems with repeated surgeries. The specialty that deals with scleroderma is the rheumatologist, so if you have not yet seen one, you should get a referral to a good one as soon as possible. The following is a good place to begin your search for information: http://sclerodermasupport.com/ You will find all kinds of links and information there, including links to a newsgroup, a mailing list, people who have it, descriptions, and lots of help. Another great place for information, as well as more links to resources, is the following: http://www.aztec.co.za/users/drdoc/ The home page takes a minute to download… from there, click "Index pages", then click "Diseases", then click "Scleroderma".   Also check the links section. Hope this helps!   Best regards,
