Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » haemochromatosis info wanted

Question:

Hi guys.  I’m looking for a bit of info for a friend.  She has scleroderma, and has just been diagnosed with haemochromatosis.  I know there was some stuff posted about this a while ago, and I’d like to find it again.  If you posted about this, could you post the info again, please?  Thanks. Response:

Hi Carmel! Having worked in a lab and having a friend with haemochromatosis, I know something of the disease.  Your friend has way to much iron in her blood. When we don’t have enough iron, we can become aneamic.  Whe there is too much, haemochromatosis occurs.  My friend has to get bled every few months to lower her iron level.  If there is too much iron  in the blood, it can damage the liver and other organs. I don’t know of the web site you are talking about, but I hope this info is somewhat useful.  Please give your friend my regards. This is the url for the LATEST study which found the ‘transferrin’ which carries the iron begins to ‘leak’ at generally 35%. This should be the *definitive* test now as to whether man is a herbivore or not. The iron stores in a vegetarian (no blood) do not rise above a low point.. whereas a meat eaters rise slowly but surely over the years. They have shown in recent study the iron from meat binds to the iron from any supplements and causes the iron from the supplement to be absorbed at VERY HIGH RATES. The iron from meat/blood … heme iron has the same effect on ALL iron in your food. It allows ones body to absorb iron AT ALL TIMES OF IRON STATUS. This was viewed , up until now , as a good thing. But as the article shows having too much iron in the body allows iron to roam ‘free’ in the body.. having been set ‘free’ by the fact the transferrin CANNOT hold it when it is generally 35% full. Dr. Eugene Weinberg , formerly of the CDC.. retired , believes the ‘low’ level for transferrin saturation should be 25% which would.. logically? .. allow ‘room’ in the transferrin for MORE iron when the body decides to place iron into it. WHY would the body place more iron in the transferrin causing it to be TOO full? The immune system uses iron as the very basis of its work. When it is attacked by an invader it removes/sequesters the iron OUT of the blood INTO the .. transferrin.. to ’starve’.. the invader. When the transferrin is TOO full .. logically? WHEN the body/immune system TRYS to put the iron into the transferrin.. it leaks out.. Iron rusts/oxidizes destroying ‘anti’oxidants. THIS is WHY Linus Pauling KNEW we were/are ‘rusting’ away.. he just never KNEW.. why.. If you see what I mean? ;) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query_old?uid=10845658&… b The transferrin saturation test MUST be a ‘fast’ type of test though because the transferrin saturation varies depending on a meal content.         Hi gang ,            I tried to do a search of diseases (WebMd) on this but came up empty, until I changed the spelling to hemochromatosis. Iron overload, I believe I had a brother with this condition. He was also a very heavy drinker. It’s hard to find out all the necessary information when you’ve been adopted into another family since birth.         ((Hugs))           Joyce – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Carmel Pacey Digby wrote: > Thanks, Diana. > Carmel > Diana Calder wrote: > > Hi Carmel! > > Having worked in a lab and having a friend with haemochromatosis, I know > > something of the disease.  Your friend has way to much iron in her blood. > > When we don’t have enough iron, we can become aneamic.  Whe there is too > > much, haemochromatosis occurs.  My friend has to get bled every few months > > to lower her > > iron level.  If there is too much iron  in the blood, it can damage the > > liver and other organs. Thanks for that.  This group is in Brisbane, out nearest capital city (though still at the other end of the state).  I’ve emailed them and will give the address to my friend.  She wants all the info she can get.  Like me, she feels that the more you know about a problem, the more power you have over it.  But she doesn’t have a computer.   Carmel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -jdgargoyle wrote: > Carmel > Try this.,…specifically about australia > http://www.ecn.net.au/hiss/ > "Carmel Pacey Digby" <jara…@tpg.com.au> wrote in message > news:399D3B04.E978FF37@tpg.com.au… > > Hi guys.  I’m looking for a bit of info for a friend.  She has > > scleroderma, and has just been diagnosed with haemochromatosis.  I know > > there was some stuff posted about this a while ago, and I’d like to find > > it again.  If you posted about this, could you post the info again, > > please?  Thanks. > > Carmel > > —
