Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » Hardening fingertips . .WHAT'S CAUSING THIS?

Question:

You haven’t started playing the guitar recently, have you?

Yeah, check that. I play both base and normal, so I have four hard fingertips on my left and two on my right hand. Serious business(ahum). Jeroen

Hi . . . .I’m experiencing a loss of sensation of temperature in a couple of fingertips, along with a hardening (or thickening) under the skin in those areas. It’s not really painful to the touch, but often aches & throbs, & it’s got the doctors stumped (10 so far). It doesn’t appear on an Xray. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with neuropathy or nerve blockage causing anything like this? My neurologist says it’s not a neurological problem (because of the hardening), but I’m not sure I believe him. Thanks! Neil I may be way off on this but… I have had a problem with my fingertips. The tips of the middle fingers of both hands and the index fingers somewhat less have become hard and unsensitive. I feel like I could put a candle out with the very tips of these fingers and not feel a thing or suffer any damage. I know what has caused mine however. I have started a nasty habit of tearing dead skin off my lips–I have been trying to stop biting the skin on my lips. I catch myself doing this with my fingers and thumb. And so the hard spots. This may be of target but I hope it helps. Jim

I’m no Doc but this could be serious especially since your Neurologist is skilled in his area, not that they don’t make mistakes, but if it involves a neurological disorder they usually can put a tag on it very quickly, even if they can’t do diddly about it. There is a disease involving the blood vessels and connective tissues that is fairly serious, so it is well worth seeing a Doc ASAP and asking about it.  In the meantime check out http://www.scleroderma.com/ to see if it might be applicable to you, I believe they have a support news group now which you can get further info under alt.support. —                follower of a "Lo-Carb_LifeStyle"             http://www.mountain-inter.net/~magnuson        Dum vivimus, vivamus — While we live, let us live.
