Question:
Way to go for the people responsible for these PSAs! Hey! We might get better known yet! Maybe instead of a Country Music Festival, we’ll sponsor a day at the opera next year! Lisa
Response:
That is great news about Pavarotti! I have a few of his tapes (no CDs yet) and I love his Christmas album. I wonder why Jason Alexander is doing the public service announcements? Jo

The Scleroderma Foundation is also indebted to the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), which was instrumental in getting this project underway. Bravo! Ronni

I’m extremely excited to tell everyone that Luciano Pavarotti, the world-renowned opera superstar, today taped public service announcements for scleroderma! Thanks to the efforts of Drs. James Seibold, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Marco Metucci (not sure of spelling), University of Florence, Maestro Pavarotti has agreed to join Jason Alexander as a celebrity spokesperson for the Scleroderma Foundation. The spots taped today featured three children who have scleroderma, including Lauren Beeson (who many of you met at the SF conference in Houston this past summer). Lauren lives in Florida, and came to the Foundation’s attention thanks to Ruth Greenspan, a board member of the Southeast Florida Chapter. This is extremely exciting for us. I was told by Maestro Pavarotti’s long-time friend that he has never done a public service announcement for any other charity. BTW, Maestro’s companion — Nicoletta Mantovani — has an aunt with scleroderma. More details about the television spots, and their distribution, will be forthcoming in the Scleroderma Foundation newsletter. Ronni

I’m not sure I understand your statement about Jason Alexander. Jason taped a PSA for the United Scleroderma Foundation that was aired over the past couple of years. He is featured in current Scleroderma Foundation print ads that were distributed to chapters during the summer, and he also has consented to participate in a video that the Scleroderma Foundation hopes to produce and distribute in 1999. These are just a few of the projects he has graciously done — and continues to do — for scleroderma patients. If you’re asking why Jason Alexander is interested in scleroderma in particular, the answer is that his sister, Karen Van Horne, has the disease. Many of you know Karen as co-host of the Monday night scleroderma chats on AOL and as a board member of the Bluebonnet Chapter (Houston) of the Scleroderma Foundation. Karen, too, has been quite prolific in promoting scleroderma in the media. In the coming months, Karen will be featured in an article in McCall’s Magazine! We’ll keep you all posted, of course! Ronni
