Scleroderma Information » Scleroderma » Is it okay to drink wine?

Question:

I used to love a good glass of wine with dinner at thanksgiving. My sister brought me a non-alcoholic wine when she came and it was delicious. I wish now I had wrote down the name of it to share but we drunk it and the bottle is in the trash. We all had some to see what it tasted like. She said she bought it at a normal department store. It tasted a lot like wine so it was a nice alternative. I too don’t drink at all.  I used to as a teen and in college.  Then got SD in Junior year of college.  I was too tired if I dranks so I gave it up.  I need all my strength and alcohol does not do me any favors. In addition I like others have said take meds which all over them say don’t drink. Doctors always ask me that when they write an RX.  Just my story. I buy sparkling apple cider (martinellis), they also make a cranberry one during holiday times.  That is always a festive thing to celebrate with and it looks good in a wine glass.  If the sparklies bother people reflux or tummies you might try some of the fruit juices.  I like Uma brand.  Also, I have had several good non alcoholic wines, I’ll look at the store this week and let you know my votes – can’t remember the names..  If you crave a good non alcoholic beer I suggest O’Douls Amber. There are so many options to make not drinking alcohol fun, festive and healthy.  Some of the packaging of these things adds to the allure :-) — Eileen McDermott, CA If you see someone without a smile give them one of yours :-) ! If you are on Methotrexate, No (or VERY LITTLE) alchohol.  The two together do not a happy liver make. Paul

That’s really individual.  It depends on what drugs you’re taking and how extensive your disease is.  My doc didn’t want me to the first few years, but it was established after awhile that I didn’t have any liver complications or problems, so she said I could have  a bit of holiday cheer. Check with your doctor.  If not, there’s some good non-alcoholic stuff – even bubbly!

I have never been told I couldn’t drink alcohol due to scleroderma but of course certain medications that I am on do warn you not to drink. So I don’t. Maria Maynard wrote: > With the Christmas party season upon us, I am wondering if it is okay to > drink alcohol with SD. > Josie.M.

Hey, bud! You know, I think even if I were drunk out of my mind on some non-alcoholic beverage from some distant planet at this time of year, I’d swear on all the money I plan to win from the lottery (as the risk of losing Alden’s love and support) that *HTH* means Her Tiny Hiney… Did I spell that right? Bwaahahahahahahahaa

I am with you Sherry,  all my medications say don’t drink I did it once and regretted it within hours.  If you do want wine make sure you do not drink it close to when you take your medications.  It is always best to check with your pharmacist or doctor they will tell you yes or no and when. Jan

Josie, Not much on a search for scleroderma+alcohol. Your own best judgment is key here: Don’t mix drugs and alcohol, drink in moderation if you drink at all, and, of course, don’t drink and drive your scooter!! Alcohol will dehydrate you (hence, the bloody hangover!) so be sure to keep up your water and juices. Alcohol is tolerated better on a non-empty stomach. I tent to stay away from it except for the occasional glass of red wine, which is ‘healthier’ that white. As always, check with your doctor if you’re unsure about something.
