Question:

Hi John,   Oh your so sweet to care so much about your sister {{{HUG}}}} . Scleroderma has many different versions. Usually in younger children/adults  the skin is the only thing involved and the life expectancy is not hampered. Even diffuse, which effects some internal organs, can be controlled today with all the different treatment options. The cause is unknown but we are learning more and more about this disease. I am very hopeful that when your sister is older there will be a cure for this disease. My non medical opinion is your sister sounds like she will live a ripe old age with this disease effecting her skin only. Its a shame your family is not talking about it. Maybe you can initiate some discussion by sharing this very question with your MOM or Dad. Print some material offline because maybe your folks don’t know enough about this disease either. Good luck and keep us all posted. Warm regards,  socjog

Hi all When i was looking through the newsgroup list, I never thought I’d stumble upon this one. I don’t actually have sclerederma, my sister(step) does. She developed it at the age of 4, the year i was born, and was told she wouldnt live to see her tenth birthday. She is now 20-years-old, working as a waitress at a local restaurant and studying law at Stellenbosch University and has a new boyfriend. No one in the family likes to talk about it, so i never bring it up: What causes it and how much longer could she have to live? The cause of scleroderma is not yet known, though most agree it’s an autoimmune disease, meaning that there’s a faulty immune response to something, causing the body to attack itself.  If your sister has localized scleroderma, more typical of juvenile scleroderma, she’s likely in no danger.  Sounds like she’s doing really well – good for her!
