Hi all. The past week and a half my left jaw bone is tender to touch and dull ache in general, now the past two days my right jaw area is too. It’s where your jaws connect and only on the top bone and slightly along where the cheek bone would start towards your face. I remember someone saying recently about jaw/face generally aching…… anyone have any ideas for me what this might signify?( It doesn’t hurt to chew or talk.) I’m seeing my regular dr tomorrow for reg checkup and dentist tues for reg cleaning. If anyone is up tonight and reads this and has time, could you email me so i could check before work monday. I know it’s not serious but is seriously puzzling me.  i’m atlantic standard time). Thanks, cindy

<< It’s where your jaws connect and only on the top bone and slightly along where the cheek bone would start towards your face >> Cindy, I am no expert, but I would guess it is your temporal mandible jaw (TMJ). You describe the correct area of hurt. Please mention this to your dentist. He might want you to see an oral surgeon. I’m not sure about the rest of it. I think there are exercises you can do if it isn’t too bad. Our daughter-in-law had some device to wear at night to keep from grinding her back teeth. The only option I have been offered is surgery. My TMJ came on over-night, I couldn’t open my mouth more than "two fingers" worth and I think mine is related to systemic sclerosis. There were phrases on the MRI like "boney erosion of the mandibular condyle" and "osteonecrosis". It was shortly before my diagnosis, and since there have been more pressing issues, I have not sought further treatment. (I also look pretty ridiculous tring to eat a hoagie.) If you are interested, somewhere in my files is the name of a wonder-surgeon in Florida who is purported to be the best in this kind of surgery. E-mail me if, after seeing your dentist, a need for this kind of treatment arises. For now, please talk with your dentist. They are qualified to do a preliminary assessment and refer you if that is what you need. Mention this before your teeth cleaning, so that the hygienist knows that opening your mouth might be hard on you. They have ways of adjusting your treatment. Good luck! Keep us posted. Metronym

I just learned from a very hard experience about 18 months ago this disease can infect your jawbones. when I went in my dentist complaining of pain he took x-rays and showed them to me. Much to my surprize my jawbone (right side) was exteremly inflamed, no teeth involvement. Dr. martin asked me if I had ever experienced a broken jawbone, of course I never had but due to the inflammation I was having, he said the pain was the same. It wasnt TMJ. I was on antibiotics for a month and had to start using a drop or two of gylceryn in my mouthwash as as well as glyceryn swabs on my gums to help prevent this again. Sjorgens Syndrome I think it is called.
