Question:

Sally,  The teeth problems are a pain. All mine I have caps on are decaying under the caps and every year I lose another tooth. I am getting dentures in the fall and from what I have read in other postings, they are never comfortable. I dont know if the sd contributes to the denture comfort or not. It seems my mouth always has an infection going on. Response:

Kenneth I had to have all my teeth pulled a year ago, and that in itself was a problem. The problem I ran into, the instruments were just 2 big for my mouth and things like that, I got a really bad infection after my teeth were pulled, what a time of it. The doctor prescribed a special mouthwash and finally it cleared up. Doris R

Anyone out there had problems with their teeth?  I’m having a lot of root canals done and before I had scleroderma it was no big deal to have my teeth worked on.  Now it seems everytime I have work done the original problem just get worse and more painful than ever – it feels like there is no circulation to the infected teeth so they don’t get the blood supply to heal. Hope some of you have some insight (although I don’t wish it on anyone) Sally

My mouth is so small that dental cleaning fell like torture from hell. I have three teeth that need to be pulled and I am dreading it already. I really wish you luck from the bottom of my heart. I know how painful this dental work is for us. Been there and still there….Love Gigi

I agree with all the postings about teeth problems.  Besides problems caused by small mouths and Sjogren’s (lack of saliva), medications commonly used for scleroderma can impact the mouth.  Some cause dry mouth.  I heard a dentist say that ProcardiaXL can cause gum overgrowth for some people.  I take a high dosage of ProcardiaXL, 120 mgs. daily, but I haven’t had the gum overgrowth problem, though — thank goodness! It’s hard to floss too.  There are some devices in pharmacies that have pieces of floss already attached to plastic implements that help to reach all your teeth.  I use these. The Scleroderma Foundation has a brochure about scleroderma and dentistry, I believe. -Ronni- ********************************** Building Awareness for Scleroderma Is Crucial to Finding a Cure Scleroderma Foundation (1/800-722-HOPE)

Dry mouth is a big contributor to teeth problems. Nancy
