Question:
We have ViaVoice and due to my southern accent, I have had a heck of a time with it. The printout to what I really said, makes me laugh so hard sometimes I get tears in my eyes. I wish I could offer a better program to you but I dont know of any. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -ALAN N wrote: > I have just given a computer to a friend of mine with scleroderma.. Response:
Alan, I have used both Dragon Naturally Speaking and IBM’s ViaVoice. I prefer the Dragon but it was a lengthy training process. It is also important, I found after going through 4 microphones, to have a good mic. It certainly taught me to speak clearly and work on my pronunciation! With regard to free or discounted software, this is going to take some work, as well. I can’t remember the name of the company, but I did try to get a discounted copy. No one from Customer Service would ever call. Since I could afford the product at the time, I dropped the issue. Keep trying. Call every few days and write a snail mail letter directly to the department head in charge. Just an additional thought, try the Scleroderma Foundation to see if they can help defray the cost: Help line: (800) 722-HOPE. I’m sure upon learning about the wonderful gift of the computer, they will do all they can do help or direct you to an organisation or funding source that will help. Good luck! –Jaimes – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -ALAN N wrote: > I have just given a computer to a friend of mine with scleroderma.. I have just given a computer to a friend of mine with scleroderma.. She cannot use her fingers or hands enough to even turn on the CPU. I have been investigating software which can basically operate the entire system with voice commands. The Naturally Speaking 4.0 professional seems to have installed macros which can do everything like surf the web, change programs, and of course operate the word processing programs.. The big version is "Professional" and is quite expensive at about $600. The smaller version called preferred USB has mos5t of the features except you would have to ‘teach’ it the commands to do other functions. This version is about $250. Has anyone experience or knowledge whether these types of programs might be available either free or at discounts for qualified persons. Thanks Alan N. La Jolla, CA

Well, somebody has to. Easy to mistake where a problem is when adding audio or video to a computer system, so a little advice was offered. Just happy to help… David.

Hi Alan, I have tried all the programs that you have mentioned and a few extra and they did not do sufficient work for me. I do have a southern accent and thought that was my problem with getting them to recognize. From speaking with others who have no accent and tried them I feel personally that the technology just isn’t quite there yet. If you read the literature with the program it sounds fantastic but getting the program to do what it says is a task in itself. I have no use of any of my fingers, only my thumbs. I have purchased 4 programs and tried 2 in addition to those that were free 30 day trials. None of them worked well enough for me to find it an advantage to use them.
