Question:

Annie,  some of it is joint involvement and some isn’t.  dr. gave me cotizone shot in the knee last week, but now the thigh bone aches just as bad.  Let’s face it, the scleroderma has really gotten a hold on me. I’ve had it for over 30 years.   Irene

Response:

Irene, your leg problems sounds like it may be from joint involvement. I am not sure mine is. It feels more like tissue or muscle pain. Smiles :-) Apple Annie ***To reply remove "nospam" from my address***

Response:

Yes, I have a lot of leg pain, infact bone dr. wanted to do 2 kneww replacements but my med. dr. wouldnt allow it.  I did just get a cortizone shot in my one knee, it helps a little bit.  Am getting around with a cane at home and a wheelchair if I go mall shopping. Irene

Response:

Hi Everyone. Well now you hit on a topic I certainly can relate to. I have a lot of leg problems. Walking is very painful for me. My problems are a combination of several things. I do have skin involvement on my legs. It is progressing and active skin inflammation so that is painful in itself. I also have rheumatoid arthritis pretty bad in my knees and one of my ankles. I also have some vascular problems. My feet are about as painful and bad off as my legs. The skin on the bottoms of my feet is very thick and hard so it hurts to walk on the bottoms of my feet. I am having to face reality only recently about using some sort of aid in my walking to try and reduce some of the pain I have to endure. So Annie, I don’t have much to offer in the way of helping to make it all go away for you but I can let you know I most certainly can relate. Ok, you said I could ask them so here I go. Hopefully these won’t go KABOOOOOM! I have a lot of leg pain. Do any of you have this problem? If so, what do you do for it? How would you describe the pain? My pain at times is just a weak crampy pain and at other times it is a sharp piercing pain. So bad I can’t stand to put weight on them. I know I have MS so my pain may be different but I was curious if anyone here suffers with anything similar and if so what you do for it. Response:

Hi, I used to have a lot of muscle spasms, esp. at night, kind of a ‘nervy,’sharp feeling. I can’t explain it any other way! And the Charlie Horses! Oh, wah hoo! I made a few changes to diet and stretching that helped me tremendously. Sharing them here, it is merely what helped me, every body is different and has its own limitations…    * Cut down on sugar consumption, MSG, and processed food (with few exceptions,      if it comes from a can, a box or a mix, count me out!), increase B-Vit intake.    * When I get up in the morning, I sit for a few minutes at the edge of the bed,      then stand, then walk a few feet to the wall and gently (no bouncing) stretch      each calf in a lunging position, trying carefully to get my back heel to the      floor. Hands on the wall at chest height, put one leg behind at a natural      stepping distance, most weight on the back toe, sinking down into the back      heel.      An alternative to this, if I’m walking across a car park that has curbs, I’ll      stand with my toes on the edge of the curb and gently sink down until my heels      are lower than my toes. This flexing helps to further stretch the calf      muscles, which are typically shortened by the wearing of high heels over      time…    * Then, I pick up each foot (one at a time or you’ll fall down!) from behind      and, holding my foot and pulling into my backside, stretch the thigh muscles.      This is difficult, I know! Often times, I feel no stretch and it’s because my      knees are not close enough together and I am not standing as staight as I can. I’d be interested to know if, over time, this helps anyone. It certainly lessened my midnight yelps! Legal Beagle: I am not a doctor.
